Daily Devotional for Wednesday 8th November

The Lord is with you

1 Samuel 17:32-40

David was determined that he could fight Goliath. He was filled with righteous anger, as we read about yesterday. Even when Saul doubted him, saying ‘You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth’ (v.33), David remained confident. Would you feel the same? Would Saul’s words have caused you to begin to doubt? Would you have stood up and offered to fight in the first place?

When God calls us to something, or sets something in our hearts, we can react in a few different ways. Firstly, we can react like David and step out. David recounted all the times God had been faithful in his life and knew that God would be faithful now too. He declares, ‘The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine’ (v.37). He was determined to step out and do what he thought was right.

But all too often we can doubt ourselves. We wonder how we can do the things God has called us to. We doubt that we could make a difference. We worry that we won’t measure up or be able to do the things He’s asking us to do. We can even think that someone else will do it and try to ignore the call of God.

God has a plan and purpose for each of us. He has things for us to do - sometimes they’re things we’re gifted in, other times they’re things we need to rely on Him for. He doesn’t call us and then leave us. He calls us, equips us, and journeys with us. Saul tried to dress David in his armour, but David took it off and went with what he knew - a sling and some stones. Comparison can cause us to try and be like others, to do things the way they do them, to follow God’s call their way. But God’s asking us to be ourselves, to run our own race, and trust Him to give us what we need as we step out and follow His call.

Time to reflect…

•    Think of a time when God asked you to do something. How did you react?

•    Have you ever doubted God’s call? Have other people doubted that you could do something?

•    When have you noticed God equipping you?

Pause to pray…

Spend some time asking God to show you what He’s calling you to, and ask Him to give you the courage you need to take a step towards that today.
