Daily Devotional for Wednesday 20th December
Good News for Everyone!
In the quiet and ordinary fields, far from the bustling town of Bethlehem, a group of shepherds experienced an extraordinary encounter. These humble keepers of sheep were chosen to be the first witnesses of the greatest news humanity would ever hear, the birth of Jesus Christ!
Imagine the darkness of that night, the stillness broken only by the sounds of the sheep and the rustling wind. When suddenly, the glory of the Lord illuminated the darkness, and an angelic messenger appeared. The initial response of the shepherds was fear, a natural reaction to the supernatural. Yet, the angel’s first words were ‘Do not be afraid.’
In the midst of their fear, the shepherds were presented with a message of immense joy and hope – “good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” This news was not exclusive, it was for all people, regardless of their status, background or circumstance.
As we reflect on this passage, we’re reminded that the good news of Jesus is for everyone. The shepherds were the least likely people to be chosen first to be told about the good news of the birth of the Saviour and yet that’s just what God did. He seeks out those that the world overlooks, and he brings them joy.
Time to reflect…
As we go about our daily lives, are there people we can be inclined to overlook?
What would it look like for us to have the heart of Jesus for these people?
Pause to pray…
Lord Jesus thank you that you see each and every one of us, and you want to come and meet with us right where we are. Help us to be watchful for those people who can get easily overlooked, and look for opportunities to share your joy with them today. Amen.
