Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 9th March service:

This 1 Samuel series has taken us on a wild journey of Samuel, his life and his commitment to God. And how at each twist and turn, God has been there in the midst, showing us His love and dedication to His people.

This week we see how David, the youngest son of Jesse defeats the giant warrior and Philistine solider Goliath.

David, who is young and small, usually shepherd’s his father’s flock in the fields and is sent with food parcels to originally check on his older brothers who are in battle. Whilst there, he comes across Goliath – the man who is taunting King Saul’s army and goading them into battle.

David soon tells King Saul that he will fight Goliath, but he won’t be alone. He says:

“The LORD who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!”

David’s faith is God Almighty to be the protection he needs is so strong that David knows he can take on Goliath – not by his own strength, but by the strength of God.

Just as David shepherds his flock, Jesus is our shepherd. He cares for us and loves us. He protects us from evil and we simply need to follow Him.

When King Saul hears of David going into battle, he offers David his own armour. But being bigger and taller than David, the armour of King Saul isn’t a great fit and hinders David.

In Ephesians 6:14-18 we are made aware of the Armour of God we have been gifted. God has made us all the most perfect-fitting armour. How amazing is that!

As David faces Goliath, he tells him in verses 45-47:

“45 You come against me with sword, spear and javelin, But I come against you in the name of the LORD almighty, the God of the armies in Israel whom you have defied.

46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I will strike you down and cut off your head…. the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.

47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by the sword or spear that the LORD saves, for the battle in the LORD’S and he will give all of you into our hands.”

David probably knows that at face value, he can’t win this battle, but with the strength of God, he is unstoppable and by using a simple stone and slingshot, David kills Goliath.

This battle wasn’t about physical strength, it’s about knowing the power of God and the love He has for His people. David shows us all how to have courage, determination and unwavering faith, even in the moments where it doesn’t look like we will necessarily win.

Questions to think about and discuss:

1.    What battles are we facing in our own lives right now?

2.      What and who are we trying to be strong for?

3.      Are we trying to face them on our own, or are we asking God for help?

4.      How can I have courage, determination and unwavering faith in aspects of my life?

5.      Is there someone in your life right now that is fighting a battle? If so, how can you pray for them in this coming week?
