Sermon Reflection Questions - The Humble King: A Kingdom of Peace

Matthew 21:1-11

Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 13th April service:

Palm Sunday represents the journey Jesus took into Jerusalem. The crowds were excited for His arrival, laying clothes and palm branches in His path, celebrating that the saviour they had been waiting for had finally arrived.

Jesus travelled not by horse, like Kings usually would – a sign of power and authority. Instead, He arrived on a donkey – the symbol of peace. Jesus had come to save the people of God, to create a world of peace and humility.

As Jesus arrived the crowds were cheering “Hosanna to the son of David, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest heaven.” Hosanna is Hebrew for “save us”. Jesus was a saviour beyond all imagination – being fully human and fully Divine. He came to offer eternal peace and salvation to His holy nation.

Let’s take a moment to think about what it means for us to follow Jesus. He enters our lives not with force and destruction, but with peace and grace. We are called to simply “follow Him” and by doing this, we can imitate His humility and love for all people through our own actions.

Reflection points:

1.      What actions can we take in our lives to demonstrate the humility and peace of Jesus?

2.      As we look forward into Holy week, let’s take some time to reflect on Jesus’ last few days on Earth. Jesus had predicted His death many times, and now as the time drew nearer, His final journey into Jerusalem seemed triumphant, but also final.

Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father,

You sent Your one and only Son to Earth so that He could save us. We thank you for this tremendous sacrifice. We pray for humility and grace in our own lives, and just as Jesus arrived in Jerusalem to the sound of cheers, knowing His fate, we continue to offer praise for the sacrifice that Jesus made so that we may have eternal life.

In Your glorious name we pray, Amen.
