Daily Devotional for Monday 30th September
Making the most of every moment
Our passage today from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians encourages us to be mindful of how we live. In these verses, Paul is telling us to live thoughtfully and intentionally. We must avoid drifting through life without paying attention to our decisions because how we live reflects our relationship with God.
Paul emphasises living wisely, which means making choices that align with God’s will and purpose for us. We need to be aware of the world around us and the influences that try to pull us away from living for God. Since "the days are evil," there are temptations and distractions everywhere. Every day offers opportunities to serve God, love others, and grow in our faith. We need to be careful, as we can waste time on things that don’t matter or, at the very worst, lead us away from God’s plan. It could be binge-watching box sets, developing an art of procrastination or an addiction that is not good for us.
In verse 18, Paul warns against getting drunk on wine, which leads to recklessness. Instead, he calls us to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Being filled with the Spirit means allowing God to direct our thoughts, actions, and decisions. It’s about letting God take control of our lives so that we can live in a way that honours Him. When we’re led by the Spirit, we make better choices and live in a way that pleases God.
Paul also encourages us to praise God together by singing hymns and spiritual songs. This shows the importance of worship and community in our lives. Praising God keeps our hearts focused on Him and helps us remember His goodness. It also reminds us to be thankful in everything. A heart full of gratitude leads to a life full of joy and peace.
Time to reflect…
So how can we apply these verses into our daily lives today?
1. Am I making the most of every opportunity God gives me?
• Reflect on how you use your time and energy. Are you intentional about seeking ways to serve God and others, or do you let distractions pull you away from living wisely?
2. Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to guide my actions, or am I letting worldly influences shape my decisions?
• Consider whether you're seeking God's guidance daily. Are you being filled with the Spirit and making decisions that honour Him, or are you being influenced by unhealthy habits or behaviours?
3. Do I have a heart of gratitude and worship in my everyday life?
• Ask yourself if you're regularly thanking God and worshiping Him. How can you incorporate more praise, gratitude, and encouragement in your relationships and personal time with God?
Pause to pray…
Take a moment to listen to the Song ‘Holy Spirit; You are welcome here’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kRWTL3tSVo
The lyrics of the chorus could be used as a prayer today:
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord
Your presence, Lord’
