Daily Devotional for Wednesday 22nd May

Jesus walks on the water

Mark 6:45-56

Like the feeding of the 5000, Jesus walking on water emphasises His uniqueness (note the contrast with the disciples struggling to row!) Immediately after the feeding miracle, Jesus sends His disciples away in a boat while He dismissed the crowd.

By the time the disciples reach the middle of the lake it is the 4th watch of the night, which is about 3am and they are struggling to row because of the wind. The disciples then spot Jesus about to walk past them! Jesus has walked out onto the water to meet the disciples. He then climbs into the boat, telling them to have courage and not be afraid. It seems the disciples have forgotten all about the miracle they’ve just witnessed with the loaves of bread as they are, again, amazed at what Jesus has done. Not only has He walked on water, but He has also stopped the wind! The disciples’ hearts are hard and they don’t fully trust Jesus yet.

Time to reflect…

When do you find it difficult to trust Jesus?

What wonderful truths about God have you read about in the bible recently that you might be tempted to forget or let slip?

What would help your faith to grow?

Praise…

To God be the glory, great things He hath done,

So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,

Who yielded His life our redemption to win,

And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the earth hear His voice;

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the people rejoice;

Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.

Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,

And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
