Daily Devotional for Monday 20th May
The death of John the Baptist
Word about Jesus is spreading and more and more people are wondering who He is. He has just sent out the disciples to preach and tell people to repent and they performed miracles. Some people are wondering if Jesus is Elijah or another prophet and some people are wondering if he is John the Baptist raised from the dead.
And this brings us to King Herod and a glimpse at what happened to John the Baptist. Herod had John arrested, we’re not told why. But, Herod was intrigued by John, liked to listen to him and hear what he had to say. Herod’s wife wasn’t a fan and didn’t like John pointing out people’s sins (especially hers!), so she saw an opportunity when it was Herod’s birthday…
Time to reflect…
How do you feel if people point out your mistakes/sins? Uncomfortable? It’s never easy to hear but it is always good to have people to whom we are accountable.
It is important to confess our sins, and not try and manipulate circumstances to try and hide them, or get away with them, as they just lead to more lies/sins.
Pause to pray…
Take some time now to think about things you need to confess to God.
Heavenly Father, thank you that you are a forgiving God. We’re sorry for the times we have hurt you and followed our own way instead of listening to you. Help us to be honest about those things we do wrong, not just with ourselves, but with you. Show us those things we need to change. Help us to grow so we become more like you. In Jesus name, Amen.
