Sermon Reflection Questions - The Rise of a King
1 Samuel 9:1-27
Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 16th February service:
In our passage today, we see how God orchestrates events to fulfil His plans, even when His hand seems hidden. Last week, Israel demanded a king, and today, we see how Saul—an ordinary man—is unexpectedly chosen.
Saul’s journey begins with a frustrating task: searching for his father’s lost donkeys. Yet, through this inconvenience, God leads him to Samuel. This reminds us that even in the disruptions of life, God is working behind the scenes. We don’t always recognise His guidance in the moment, but He is leading us step by step.
Saul comes from a wealthy family and is physically impressive, yet his selection isn’t about his appearance—it’s about God’s purpose. As he searches for the donkeys, his servant suggests they seek guidance from a prophet, demonstrating how God places the right people around us to encourage and direct us. Who in our lives has God used in this way? And how might we be that person for someone else?
God’s timing is also perfect. The day before Saul arrives, God speaks to Samuel, revealing His plan. Even when things seem delayed or uncertain in our own lives, we can trust that God is never late. This is particularly relevant as we prepare to move onto Langley—our role is to trust in His timing and provision.
Saul, unaware of what is happening, protests that he is unqualified. But God’s plans are not based on human qualifications. He equips those He calls. At the feast, Saul is given the place of honour and the best portion—a sign of God's favour. We may not always feel prepared for what God calls us to, but His plans for us are always for our good and His glory.
In Proverbs 20:24, we read, “A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?” Just as Saul had to trust in what he couldn’t yet see, we, too, are called to trust that God is leading us—even when we don’t have all the answers.
So, whether you see God’s hand clearly or feel lost today, know that He is at work. Let us place our trust in His leadership, knowing that His plans are always greater than our own.
Questions to think about and discuss:
Can you recall a time when an unexpected event turned out to be part of God’s plan?
2. How does Saul’s story challenge the way we perceive interruptions or frustrations in life?
3. Who has been a ‘servant’ in your life—someone who has encouraged or directed you towards God’s guidance?
4. In what areas of your life do you struggle to trust God’s timing?
5. How does Saul’s reluctance to step into leadership resonate with your own experiences of feeling unqualified or unprepared?
6. How can we encourage one another to trust in God’s plans, even when we don’t see the full picture?
