Daily Devotional for Friday 3rd November
The Lord is with David
It’s a sad thing to say, but when Saul sinned so badly that the Lord rejected him as king over Israel, God’s spirit was withdrawn from Saul, and an evil spirit was sent to terrorize Saul, an instrument of judgement from the Lord. Saul’s servants suggested they look for someone who could skilfully play the harp to help Saul during these attacks. The irony of this passage is that another servant or courtier, a young man, suggested David to come play for King Saul! This is what he said about David,
“Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is a skilful musician, a mighty man of valour, a warrior, one prudent in speech, and a handsome man; and the Lord is with him.”
The Lord’s hand on David was evident to all! He was skilled in music, a good warrior, who spoke well, with prudence, and was handsome, but above all “The Lord is with him”. So they brought David in to play the harp for King Saul, and when he did so, the evil spirit would depart from Saul.
In David’s life, he was brought in from tending the flocks, where he had returned after Samuel anointed him, into the court of the King, to tend him, and was made his armour bearer. And King Saul loved David.
Time to reflect…
When God is with us, it is apparent to others. And when God has a call on our lives, as we give those lives to God, He will use them.
When we let God be the One who promotes us, or opens the right door for us, when we wait on Him and worship Him, He can move us into the right position, and make us effective for Him – for His glory.
Pause to pray…
Dear God, please keep our eyes focused on You, our hearts totally and completely devoted to You, that we may know Your love and favour in our lives. May You, God, matter the most to us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
