Daily Devotional for Monday 21st October

Be ready to share

1 Peter 3:15-22

I remember being on a train on my way home after a long day at a university open day. I went with a few friends and a guy was sitting next to me. He had his earphones on and looked quite comfortable. I felt the Holy Spirit ask me “Speak to him”. My first response was no way! I made a deal with God that I would speak to him if he took his earphones out. The second I said that to God, the guy took his headphones out. Long story short, we ended up talking about his life struggles and I got to share my faith with him. He went from being a complete atheist to being curious and wanting to know more about Jesus.

I felt prepared for this interaction because I was ready to share my faith and had my story ready to go at any moment's notice. Like Peter says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have”. We have a hope the world is desperate for. We turn on the news and we see hopelessness, we talk to non-Christian friends and we hear hopelessness and sometimes even family members complaining about how the world isn’t fair. We have a hope that can change people and save us from death through Jesus!

You have the power to share that hope around you. We don’t need to stand on a soap box and scream it at the top of our lungs, but like Peter says, “Do this with gentleness and respect”. Sharing your experience with Jesus is always a great way to tell people what Jesus means to you. Have that experience ready to share so when someone asks about it, you aren’t scrambling for words or poetic language, but sharing from the heart on how the gospel changes lives.

Time to reflect…

What would you say to someone if they asked about your faith? What does sharing the gospel with gentleness and respect look like?

Pause to pray…

Lord Jesus, thank you that you are the hope of the world, and that hope lives inside of us. Give us the courage to share your Gospel with others so they may have that hope as well. In Jesus’s mighty name, we pray, Amen.
