Speak Life: Building Up, Not Tearing Down

Ephesians 4:25-32

Paul continues his practical guidance for Christian living by emphasising what it means to live as new creations in Christ. He provides specific instructions that help us reflect our new identity in our daily interactions, urging us to live in a way that honours God and builds up the body of Christ.

The first instruction Paul gives is to ‘put off falsehood and speak truthfully.’ Honesty is foundational to any relationship, especially within the body of Christ. When we speak the truth, we foster trust and unity. Our words should reflect our new nature, characterised by integrity and love. We are to speak truth, not to hurt, but to heal and strengthen our relationships.

Paul then addresses anger, a powerful emotion that can lead to sin if not handled correctly. ‘In your anger do not sin’ reminds us that anger itself is not necessarily sinful, but how we handle it can be. Holding onto anger can give the devil a foothold in our lives, leading to bitterness and division. Paul’s advice to ‘not let the sun go down while you are still angry’ encourages us to resolve conflicts quickly and seek reconciliation. Unresolved anger can fester and harm both our relationships and our spiritual health.

He also instructs us on our conduct, particularly regarding work and speech. Those who have been stealing are called to stop and instead work diligently, not just for personal gain, but to be in a position to help others. This shift from taking to giving reflects the transformation Christ brings into our lives. Similarly, our speech is to be marked by words that build up rather than tear down. ‘Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.’ Our words should be a source of encouragement and grace, tailored to the needs of those around us.

Paul's instruction to ‘not grieve the Holy Spirit of God’ reminds us that our actions and attitudes matter to God. When we harbour bitterness, rage, anger, and malice, we act contrary to the Spirit who has sealed us for redemption. Instead, we are called to ‘be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.’ Our kindness and forgiveness reflect God's nature and demonstrate the gospel's power at work in us.

Time to reflect…

  • Are there areas in your life where you struggle to speak truthfully or manage anger?

  • How can your words and actions better reflect the new life you have in Christ?

  • Is there someone you need to forgive or seek reconciliation with today?

Pause to pray…

Father, thank You for the clear guidance You provide in Your Word. Help us to live in a way that reflects the new life we have in Christ. Teach us to speak truthfully, to manage our anger righteously, and to use our words to build others up. May we not grieve Your Spirit, but instead live as vessels of Your love and grace. Give us the strength to forgive as we have been forgiven and to extend kindness and compassion to those around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
